Farmers' Perception of Tick-borne diseases in Illinois

Determining knowledge, attitudes and practices of various farming groups in Illinois regarding ticks and tick-borne diseases in humans.

 

You are being asked to participate in a voluntary research study. The purpose of this study is to determine the perception and awareness of various farming groups in Illinois with regard to ticks and tick-borne diseases that affect humans. Participating in this study will involve a one-time participation of filling out a survey questionnaire that has questions which have been divided into various sections i.e. demographics, knowledge, attitude and practices. Your participation will last no longer than 25 - 30 minutes. Risks related to this research are minimal and include slight fatigue from answering the survey and spending time thinking about answers to the questions in the survey. There are no direct benefits to you if you participate in this study however, the benefit of this research is it will help researchers determine the awareness surrounding human tick-borne diseases in Illinois and will help Extension officers and researchers develop effective tick prevention materials. There is no alternative to participating in this study currently.

What procedures are involved?

The study procedures are filing out the survey questionnaire that has questions on demographics, knowledge, attitude and practices regarding ticks and tick-borne diseases in Illinois.

 

This research will be performed electronically through Web Tools. You will need to participate one time over the next 25 - 30 minutes. The entire study will last no more than 30 minutes.

 

Will my study-related information be kept confidential?

Faculty, staff, students, and others with permission or authority to see your study information will maintain its confidentiality to the extent permitted and required by laws and university policies. The names or personal identifiers of participants will not be published or presented.

 

Will I be reimbursed for any expenses or paid for my participation in this research?

You will be provided a set of 5 forever stamps after the completion of the survey questionnaire. You will be asked at the end of the survey to provide us with your contact information if you wish to receive the stamps. If you do not wish to receive the stamps, then you do not need to provide your contact information and you will not be given the stamps.  The record of your mailing address will not be retained by the research team after the compensation (set of 5 forever stamps) has been sent to you. 

 

Can I withdraw or be removed from the study?

If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your consent and discontinue participation at any time. Your participation in this research is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate, or to withdraw after beginning participation, will not affect your current or future dealings with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

 

The researchers also have the right to stop your participation in this study without your consent if they believe it is in your best interests.

 

Will data collected from me be used for any other research?

Your de-identified information could be used for future research without additional informed consent.
